Conductor and knowledge bases

What Conductor can and cannot do with knowledge bases today, and how to use it to set one up and attach it to an agent.

Conductor does not create, edit or search knowledge bases itself. It helps in three ways: a guided tour of the setup, attaching documents as context for a conversation, and editing which knowledge bases an agent uses.

Guided tour: add a knowledge base#

In the Conductor side panel, type "knowledge base" (or "kb", "faq", "document") in Guided tour and choose Show me. You can also ask "Walk me through adding a knowledge base" in a conversation. The tour has four steps:

Step Page What to do
Open Knowledge Base Knowledge Base In the sidebar under BUILD.
Create a knowledge base Knowledge Base Upload documents, paste text or add website URLs.
Attach it to the agent Agents In the agent's knowledge base settings.
Test retrieval Agents Ask a question from the document in the test panel.

Each step opens the page and highlights the control. Use Next, Back and Done to move through it.

Attach documents to a conversation#

Attach a text file (.txt, .md, .csv or .json, up to 200 KB) to a Conductor conversation and ask about it. Conductor reads the first 8,000 characters of each file. Use it to:

  • Turn an FAQ document into prompt instructions you then give to the edit panel.
  • Ask for simulation test cases based on the questions in a document (with an agent attached).
  • Check a policy document for answers the agent should give.

A file attached to a conversation is context for that conversation only. It is not added to a knowledge base and the agent cannot retrieve it on calls.

On Home, choose the paperclip in the composer (Attach a text file) and pick a .txt, .md, .csv or .json file up to 200 KB.

Attach a knowledge base to an agent#

With an OpenAI key, the agent edit panel (Conductor in the builder header) can propose changes to any top-level field of the agent's LLM, which includes knowledge_base_ids and kb_config. Ask with the knowledge base id, for example "Attach knowledge base knowledge_base_4f1c... to this agent". Review the diff and Accept.

Mock mode does not handle knowledge base requests. Attach knowledge bases in the builder's Knowledge Base section instead.
