International calling

Get numbers outside Australia, control which countries each number can call and be called from, and keep media close to your callers.

Tried works with numbers in any country your carrier supports. This page covers numbers in other countries, country allow lists, number formats, and where call media is processed.

Numbers in other countries#

Your own numbers. Import any E.164 number over SIP from your carrier or PBX. See SIP trunking and Twilio.

Bought numbers. Tried does not sell numbers today. Get numbers in other countries from your carrier or Twilio and connect them as above.

Regulatory bundles

Many countries require a regulatory bundle (business address, identity documents) before a carrier sells you a number. Arrange it with your carrier or in your Twilio console before you connect the number.

Allowed countries per number#

Each number has two allow lists. An empty list (or null) allows every country.

Field Dashboard Effect
allowed_inbound_country_list Allowed Inbound Countries Callers from other countries are hung up before the agent joins.
allowed_outbound_country_list Allowed Outbound Countries Calls to other countries return HTTP 400 and are not dialled. Batch tasks to those countries fail.

  "allowed_inbound_country_list": ["AU", "NZ"],
  "allowed_outbound_country_list": ["AU"]
}

The country of a phone number is worked out with libphonenumber, so the check uses the number's country calling code and numbering plan, not the carrier. The dashboard picker lists Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore, India, Philippines, Germany, France and Japan. The API accepts any ISO code.

Restricting outbound countries is the simplest guard against toll fraud on a number whose agent can be told what to dial.

Number formats#

  • Phone numbers in the API are E.164: + then the country code and number, 7 to 15 digits, for example +61290001234 or +442071234567.
  • to_number on outbound calls must be E.164 unless you set ignore_e164_validation: true (for extensions or carrier-specific dialling).
  • Inbound caller numbers that arrive as digits only are stored with a leading +.
  • In batch CSV uploads, Australian national numbers such as 0412345678 are converted to +61412345678. Other national formats are not converted.
  • The dashboard shows Australian numbers in local format (+61 2 5550 1234), North American numbers as +1 (415) 555-1234, and other numbers as stored.

Where media is processed#

Call audio flows through the LiveKit deployment set by LIVEKIT_URL and LIVEKIT_SIP_URI. For low latency, run LiveKit in the region nearest your callers (the AU SIP region for Australian numbers).

  • Telnyx numbers: set TELNYX_ANCHORSITE to Sydney, Australia to anchor media in Sydney.
  • Twilio trunks: create the Elastic SIP trunk in the region nearest your callers (for example Australia AU1).

Running separate LiveKit clusters per region with numbers pinned to a region is a deployment step. The API currently uses one LiveKit URL; per-number region selection is not built. Deployment step

Calling hours and timezones#

Batch calls use a call time window in one IANA timezone (default Australia/Sydney). When a list spans timezones, split it into one batch per region so each window matches local hours. See Batch calls.
